7 Basic Elements Found in Every Custom Patches

Patch manufacturers have ready made patches that you can use for your garment. However, you may not like the available designed patches on stock. What do you do if you like to create your own personalized patch?

When deciding to create and buy custom patches online, it is important to consider several factors such as purpose, design, size, shape and your budget. Check out the 7 elements of every custom patch:

1.Purpose

Creating custom patches start with an idea or a purpose. What do you intend to use your patches for? Is it for an event? Will it serve as a symbol of your company’s brand?

Before coming up with a perfect design, you need to think about your intended purpose. It will be a lot easier for you to think of the appropriate design once you’ve decided what your patch is for.

2.Design

Making a design requires the general layout of the patch together with all minute details. One thing you need to remember is not to use too many images, for this will make your patch look stuffed.

The next thing you need to do is to forward your final design to the manufacturer through a sketch or a picture.

However, if you do not know how to do the layout, let your manufacturer know about it. They have artists who know exactly how to layout a design. All you need to do is let the artist know the purpose of the patch and describe how you want it to look. Don’t worry, some manufacturers do not charge extra for this service.

3.Shape

One of the best things about custom patches is the availability of different shapes. We normally see round, rectangular, triangular and square patches. Apart from these regular shapes, you can also try using heart-shaped, oval and diamond patches.

You can also maximize the shape by matching it with the purpose of your patch. For example, military patches would sometimes use shield shapes.

4.Backing

Backing is basically the type of material used to attach the patch into a garment. There are 4 basic types of backing:

•Sewn. There is basically no backing used. Rather, the patch is directly sewn onto the garment.

•Heat seal. This is also referred to as iron-on patch. For the patch to be attached, an iron should be used to melt the strong adhesive backing of the patch into the garment.

•Adhesive. Unlike heat seal, the adhesive used in this type of backing comes off easily. This type of backing is best used for one-time use only such as annual events.

•Velcro. The hook and soft side of the Velcro backing allows for a convenient attachment and reattachment to the garment especially during laundry. This type of backing is commonly used for military patches.

5.Size

Choosing the right size for custom patches will depend on the design. If the patch is small and you have a lot of artwork in it, the design will only look crammed.

How do you determine the right dimension for your patch? The dimension of the patch is determined by looking at the length of the texts and the number of images in it. Bear in mind that the minimum height of the text is ¼ inches. The text size can’t get any smaller than that, otherwise it won’t be readable.

6.Color

Deciding the right colors for the patch is easy. Follow the basic rule: combination of light and dark colors. For example, if the background is dark colored, match it with light-colored text. The same way, if the background is dark then the text should be of a lighter color.

7.Cost

The cost of custom patches depends on the design and size. This means that a patch with a complicated design or have a bigger size is more expensive than a simple and smaller patch.
